Using Thermal Desorption– Gas Chromatography for the Detection of Fire Accelerants in Arson Residues

چکیده
Liquids like gasoline comprise a mixture of hundreds of hydrocarbon components. Gas chromatography of these complex mixtures produces highly detailed chromatograms that are characteristic of a particular sample. Although many of the volatile components will be lost during the fire, sufficient less-volatile components may have been left in partially burned wood or other materials to enable the detection and identification of the fire accelerant from its chromatographic “fingerprint”.

Looking into some basic properties of accelerants in fire residues for higher performance in arson analysis
The success of an arson analysis relies largely on a sound sampling procedure. In addition to many technical aspects on the sample preparation itself, it is also of primary importance that fire scene investigators and arson analysts have a full understanding of the basic behaviors of exogenous flammable fluids so that a better sampling and hence a more successful analysis of the arson evidence ...

Objective: It has been greatly attempted to learn more about chemical information on finger prints using new vehicular technique use for the detection of a variety of substances, including narcotic drugs and medicines, as well using nano particles bound to specific antibodies. Over the last few years, the sensitive techniques of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry have been found for the d...
متن کاملAnalysis of Accelerants in Fire Debris - Data Interpretation.
Analysis of accelerants in fire debris involves the isolation of residual volatiles from the matrix and the analysis of these volatiles, usually by gas chromatography (GC). The resulting chromatograms are interpreted by comparing to a library of accelerant chromatograms obtained under similar conditions. This review first mentions ASTM's system in classifying fire accelerants into light petrole...
متن کاملHCl- Etched Steel Fiber for Determination of Phthalates in Water Samples by Solid-Phase Microextraction
In the present work, a stainless steel wire was etched by hydrochloric acid during a chemical etching process. The obtained black layer on the surface of the fiber was used as sorbent for extraction of trace amount of phthalates in the aqueous samples by solid phase microextraction. New fiber efficiency was investigated using a home-made solid-phase microextraction (SPME) device and gas chr...
متن کاملMethods of Fire Debris Preparation for Detection of Accelerants.
Forensic scientists use various techniques to separate accelerants from fire debris samples before instrumental identification of added fuels. Among the choices available, traditional micro-distillation, steam distillation, vacuum distillation, headspace, heated headspace, and several vapor adsorption/desorption methods provide various advantages and disadvantages. This communication reviews th...
